1st place - Audi Q5
Without a doubt, the more spirited driving and sportier character of the Audi Q5 are what impressed our drivers the most. This little SUV also makes wonderful use of the brand's legendary quattro AWD system.
Despite reaching 100 km/h from a standstill in a fraction of a second slower than the Lexus, the Q5 still won top honors in the performance department based on driving dynamics, steering response and overall feel. Plus, the competent brakes are on the aggressive side -- exactly what you expect from a "sport" utility vehicle.
Looks also convinced the jury, especially the emphasis on athletic style rather than pure refinement. After all, that's what today's premium SUV buyers look for.
The interior isn't without flaws, however. One could wish for a warmer-looking layout and additional features, especially when compared with both rivals. Passenger room also could be more generous. On the other hand, build quality is beyond reproach and ergonomics have been smartly thought out.
Back to the outside, the sideview mirrors are exaggerated in size and they impede front three-quarter visibility, which might compromise pedestrian safety. And while the firm, effective suspension system contributes to dynamic handling, a sacrifice in ride quality is sometimes necessary when driving over damaged roads.
Of all premium SUVs in the $40K-$50K range, though, the Audi Q5 is definitely the most assertive when it comes to sportiness combined with utility.
"In my opinion, it's the most pleasant to drive among all models in this competition. The steering is sharp and the vehicle carries a solid feel, both when accelerating and decelerating. A true "sport" utility vehicle!"
