Amory B. Lovins is one of the world's most well-known advocates for energy efficiency. As Chief scientist at the Rocky Mountain Institute, in Colorado, he was recently awarded the Volvo Environment Prize (worth nearly $CA225,000) for his exceptional breakthroughs and contributions over the past 30 years.
Mr. Lovins has long been advocating a more efficient use of energy rather than increasing the production of it. He claims that sufficient energy exists for everyone to live and move about comfortably, provided that we do away with the wasteful energy practices of today.
Unlike many other scientists and researchers who are pessimistic about global warming, Mr. Lovins has a positive approach. Although there might be major changes already under way that cannot be stopped, he believes that if countries saved energy 2 to 3 times faster than they are now, the problem would be solved.
To highlight just how abundant energy supplies are, Mr. Lovins estimated that only 0.3 percent of the fuel that we put into our cars actually moves the driver. The other 99.7 percent is used to move the vehicle itself. Amazing, isn't it?
