On May 4th, General Motors Co. quietly announced the end of production of their Cadillac STS model. The last STS rolled off the production line in Lansing Michigan last week.
Since 2004, the Cadillac STS and STS-V have been produced at the Lansing plant, with over 125,000 buyers taking them home. However, the time for smaller, more compact, cars is upon us and Cadillac has alluded for some time that they planned to phase out the STS and DTS full-size luxury sedans in favour of smaller, more economical rides.
The Lansing production plant will remain open (no jobs will be lost), however, will be closed from June to July in order to accommodate the plant with the necessary equipment for production of Cadillac's upcoming ATS compact sedan due to be released in 2012.
Some GM enthusiasts have commented that the demise of the STS was thanks to its lack of originality, being so close to the CTS in looks and size. But will the brand new ATS compact sedan fill the void?
