For FTV Racing, from British Columbia, the challenge is daunting, but progress is very encouraging. "Our eVaro hybrid car has a range of 200 kilometres in full electric mode and up to 750 kilometres with the assist of the on-board gasoline-powered generator -- all that with a top speed of 210 km/h," said team leader Braz Zimmerman. "Confidence is high, but we’re far from finished."

The eVaro is a unique three-wheel vehicle with two seats and a small trunk capable of storing a pair of golf bags. Whether the company wins the grand prize or not, the eVaro will likely hit the Canadian market by 2012 at a price hovering around $43,000.

"Other than the award and the $10 million, we’re interested in the credibility that it brings to our project. I think we’re on the right path," concluded Mr. Zimmerman.

Quebec-based companies such as VE Performance are also participating in the contest.
