Bridgestone/Firestone Survey seeks to understand winter driving chaos at the first sign of snow

Ever wonder how a glimpse of winter flurries can send Canadian drivers into a breaking frenzy? A new survey by Bridgestone/Firestone Canada, conducted by Maritz: Thompson Lightstone, tries to answer the age-old question why do Canadian drivers slow down at the first sign of snow? According to at least 25 per cent of Canadian drivers, it is because they worry that other drivers are simply not prepared for winter driving. So, how do Canadian drivers get prepared for winter driving?

According to the survey it is by avoiding the roads altogether, with 70 percent of Canadian drivers saying they simply stay off the roads during bad weather.

"For many Canadians, who live through the long winter months with busy schedules, it's not a viable option to stay off the roads this winter," says John Lindo, Manager, Public Relations, Bridgestone/Firestone Canada Inc. "We spend a great deal of time engineering our Blizzak winter tires and we thought a survey could help us understand the unique driving behaviours and attitudes of Canadians in winter."

Other Winter Driving Survey Results:

  • Over 70 per cent of Canadian drivers feel they are more likely to have an accident in the winter months than in the summer but only three percent of Canadian drivers carry a safety/emergency kit in their vehicle to help them in the event of the accident they fear most;
  • The biggest concern Canadians have about winter driving is icy road conditions, but only eight per cent stated that they drive slowly or more cautiously in winter weather;
