Subaru just announced that it would begin evaluating its R1e electric vehicle (EV) in the United States this summer in collaboration with the New York Power Authority (NYPA), which will add it to its vehicle fleet.
The Subaru R1e, on display at the New York International Auto Show until March 30, is based on the R1 minicar currently sold in Japan. It was developed by Subaru in partnership with the Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. (TEPCO).
The Subaru R1e uses state-of-the-art, fast-charge lithium-ion battery technology that eliminates charge memory loss. Service life for this high-density lithium-ion battery is estimated at 10 years and 160,000 kilometers. The small two-seater, powered by an AC permanent magnet synchronized motor producing 40 kW (54 hp), is capable of driving at speeds up to 105 kph with a range of up to 80 km, making it an ideal urban commuter. The Subaru R1e can be "quick-charged" to 80-percent capacity in only 15 minutes -- and fully charged overnight (8 hours) while connected to a standard household electrical outlet.
