1st place - Honda Fit Sport
The Honda Fit unanimously won Auto123.com’s subcompact hatchback comparison test, although the three members of our jury pointed to different reasons for putting it at the top.
Some were most impressed by the car’s versatility and interior configuration. A total of 20 boxes managed to fit inside what could be described as a compact warehouse. Even with the rear seatbacks in place, the trunk was big enough to swallow six boxes.
Others could not believe that the Fit posted the best fuel economy average at the end of our road test. At 5.3 L/100 km, it trumped the closest rival by 0.2 litre.
By a wide margin, the Honda also won top honors in the performance and driving departments. It accelerated faster (10.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and 17.2 seconds to the quarter mile) and took less ground to stop (42 metres from 100 to 0 km/h) than both the Yaris and Versa.
While Fit Sport’s exterior and interior styling deserves praise, the panel agreed that the base model looks bland and anonymous.
On the road, this car felt sharper and livelier in tight corners as the steering wheel provided greater feedback to the driver. Also worth mentioning is the performance of the 5-speed automatic transmission, which proved quicker and more responsive in sporty driving conditions. The noise level inside the cabin, on the other hand, was slightly higher than the competition’s.
Overall, though, the Honda Fit offers the best combination of performance, economy and practicality among all subcompact hatchbacks.
