The suspense is finally over: The all-new Tesla Model 3 made its first public appearance last night in California ― and it certainly didn’t disappoint. In less than 24 hours, over 115,000 people made a $1,000 deposit to reserve a copy!

Sporting a similar look to Tesla’s other two vehicles, the Model 3 comes with a giant centre touchscreen whose size has yet to be specified.

As promised, the car will retail from just $35,000 USD before tax incentives (Canadian pricing will be announced at a later date). Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that, even without any options, the Model 3 is a “very good car.”

Deliveries will begin in late 2017 with current Tesla customers who made a reservation, then continue with other customers who waited long hours to put down money at a Tesla store or online.

In terms of performance, the Tesla Model 3 offers a range of 215 miles (approx. 340 kilometres), accelerates from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in under six seconds, and comfortably sits five adults. Musk also pointed out that it received a 5-star rating in all collision tests and will be available with Autopilot features. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Supercharger network will double by the time the Model 3 goes on sale, from 3,600 stations right now to 7,200 in 18 months.

At $35K USD, the Tesla Model 3 is a big deal and will seriously challenge more mainstream competitors like the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt. That’s fantastic news for the development and proliferation of electric cars.
