Day two: Pocono Raceway.
On Friday, we gathered at the Pocono Raceway, which is where the famous Pocono 500 is held. The manufacturers had assembled their products along pit lane and all the vehicles had keys in the ignition. The course marshals allowed us onto the track at 1-2 second intervals. Believe me, that is absolutely no time at all when you're driving a 4 cylinder Honda and the journalist behind has control of a Dodge Viper. If you've ever wondered what goes through the mind as you come into a hairpin at 70mph and the fellow behind is keeping the sun off your rear bumper by staying 10 inches behind you, email me, as I can't print the exact words here!
Of course, it was a lot of fun and again, I will list a few vehicles that I enjoyed.
The Mustang Cobra convertible was a blast. With the top down, the speed felt almost doubled and the exhaust noise was absolutely incredible.
A Subaru WRX and a racetrack, do I need to say more?
The highest speed that I attained that day was 130MPH on the back straight in the superb Jaguar XK, although in the corners, I have to say I preferred their S-Type R.
As I had taken my wife along, her day was made by riding in the full police spec Hemi-powered Dodge Charger. Since there was a line-up for this, one of the guys from the Boston Globe took us both around. She loved it. I was not quite so happy sitting in the rear of the cruiser but at least they let me out without giving me a ticket. That's a first!
By far, the most fun was had behind the wheel of the Mini Cooper S convertible. This little whiz-machine was right in its element in the twists and turns. A small fast car, tight corners and no speed limit, come on now, it's almost X-rated entertainment.
In conclusion, all I can say is that my mum and dad always wanted me to be a lawyer. I'm glad that I never listened to those two. No lawyer's ever had as much fun in the courtroom as I did at the Test Fest!
