The sales numbers for the 6 months of the 2011 calendar year are in, and Canadians bought 808,780 new cars and trucks so far. That’s about 2.8% more than last year’s result for the same period.

However, we bought 1.8% less cars and 7% more trucks. Keep in mind that trucks include SUVs and crossovers, many of which are based on car platforms and mechanicals.

So far this year, here are Canada’s top 10 bestselling vehicles.

10th place: Chevrolet Cruze – 18,769 units

Competitive or not, GM’s compact cars always sold in significant numbers, often thanks to rebates and low interest rates. But the Cruze sedan doesn’t need incentives to be considered as a smart purchase; it’s the AJAC’s 2011 Canadian Car of the Year and Auto123.com’s 2011 Compact Car of the Year.

The Cruze is available in LS, Eco, LT and LTZ trim levels and can be equipped with one of two engines; its available 1.4-litre engine may been low in displacement, but with the help of a turbocharger and direct injection, it develops 138 horsepower as well as 148 pound-feet of torque from 1,850 rpm. The Cruze Eco boasts excellent fuel economy numbers of 7.2 L/100 km city and 4.6 L/100 km highway.

More good news: GM just announced that a diesel-powered version of the Cruze will be offered for 2013, while the 5-door version sold in Europe could very well make it to North America as well.

The Chevrolet Cruze ranks fourth in sales among cars, and has a good chance of finishing the year in 3rd place.
