6th place: Ford Escape – 23,183 units
The Escape has been around for quite a while in its current form; despite a facelift in 2008 and constant upgrades to its powertrains and trim levels, Ford’s compact SUV is still racking up the sales.
The reasons for this are easy to understand. First and foremost, the Escape offers what small families need the most, such as interior space, fuel efficiency and user-friendliness. Add low interest rates or cash rebates to that, and the deal is compelling. You can choose between a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder for fuel economy or a 240-hp, 3.0-litre V6 for towing up to 3,500 lbs.
There is also an Escape Hybrid model that can provide fuel economy numbers as low as 5.8 L/100 km in the city and 6.5 L/100 km on the highway; granted, it’s far from affordable and sales are quite modest, but it’s the only compact hybrid SUV around for the time being.
