Mazda CX-9

Launched in 2017, the Mazda CX-9 is still one of the few in the category to offer only a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine under the hood. The 2.5L unit is sufficient when the vehicle isn't overly loaded, but with a trailer hitched up, the whole family on board and some gear in the trunk, it can struggle to do its job quietly.

But good news for Mazda lovers: the automaker is already working on a pair of midsize crossovers to support or replace the current CX-9. Indeed, within two years, Mazda will have the CX-70 (two rows of seats) and the CX-90, a model that will instead be powered by a turbocharged inline-6 powertrain with some form of onboard electrification.
