The latest-edition 2019 Mazda CX-9 is a much more modern and relevant affair that the old, and it’s one of the first models in the segment to use a 4-cylinder turbo, quite unusual for a vehicle of this size. That 2.5L 4-cylinder turbo unit gives the CX-9 adequate power for its purposes, although frankly a V6 still makes for more-supple performance for a mid-size utility model.
That the automatic transmission has only 6 speeds also sets the model slightly behind others in the category, but that doesn’t keep the CX-9 from being one of the most pleasant-to-drive SUVs in its class.
