9 – 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe: $7,250,000 (Mecum Auction, August 2009)

The 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra CSX2601 was one of six cars built in 1964-1965 by Carroll Shelby to take on the Ferraris which dominated the GT Class of the FIA’s Manufacturers Championship back then. The sleek, ultra-aerodynamic shape developed by Australian racer Peter Brock allowed a top speed gain of 40 km/h over the regular Cobra! The CSX2601 took part in major races, including at Daytona, Monza and Nürburgring, helping Bob Bondurant win the Manufacturers Championship in 1965.

10 – 1962 Ferrari 250 LM: $6,979,000 (RM Auctions and Sotheby’s, May 2008)

This legendary Ferrari 250 LM is also the work of Pininfarina (design) and Scaglietti (bodywork). Only 32 units were produced and this one, codenamed 5845GT, was the fourth of that group. Actively involved in racing, its glory years culminated in 1965 with a triumph at the 24 Hours of Mans thanks to drivers Jochen Rindt (Germany) and Masten Gregory (United States).
