If you had to pick a segment that has come on like gangbusters in the last few years, it might well be that of small SUVs. Today we look specifically at the top subcompact SUVs in Canada in 2019-2020. Remember, this is a category that didn’t even exist as recently as 2010.
There were a few models around back then that kind of met the criteria, such as the Suzuki SX4 and the Toyota Matrix. In 2011, a precursor of sorts in the form of the Mitsubishi RVR appeared; it was followed by models like the Chevrolet Trax and the Subaru XV Crosstrek. By 2015, the segment was taking real shape as a category in and of itself. Today, it’s as busy a segment as a Costco on a Saturday morning.
How busy? You can easily count a baker’s dozen of models in the segment. In 2019 and going into 2020, here are those that stand out, mostly for good reasons (though a few for bad).
Next week, our Top 10 Compact SUVs in Canada in 2019-2020!
1 – Hyundai Kona
Since its recent arrival on the market, the Hyundai Kona has rapidly staked a claim near the top of its segment. And it shows little sign of slowing down either: over the first six months of 2019, it was the top seller in its class in Canada. In all, 15,212 consumers thought enough of it to sign on the dotted line. One of the biggest success stories of the industry of recent years.
From our review:
“The Hyundai Kona, in the eyes of many a Canadian motorist, simply has everything, from a varied trim lineup to great fuel economy to a highly appealing shape… I should mention also the high quality of the exterior construction, because that’s not always a given in this budget-conscious segment.”
