Mercedes-Benz is set to ring in the new year by launching a pair of green cars at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Both the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID and E 400 HYBRID will hit the market in 2012, but only the latter will initially be sold this side of the Atlantic.

The V6 engine produces 306 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque and teams up with a lithium-ion battery-fed electric motor that adds another 26 hp (20 kW) and 184 lb-ft to the Mercedes-Benz E 400 HYBRID. Further helped by a start/stop system and regenerative brakes, the car posts a combined city-highway rating of 8.71L/100km (27 US mpg).

Exclusive to Europe and available as a sedan or wagon, the Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID relies on a diesel-powered 4-cylinder engine and the same electric motor. Combined, they generate 204 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Together, they achieve 15% better fuel economy (4.2L/100km) than the E 250 CDI.
