The leading car makers from both Germany and China have just signed a memorandum of understanding relating to electric vehicles, according to a press release from Volkswagen.

What’s a memorandum of understanding? Basically, it’s a loosely-termed and non-binding agreement where two companies agree to explore future options for partnership. In this case, the partnerships in question would relate to the areas of hybrids and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries.

The memorandum was signed last week by VW’s Dr. Martin Winterkorn, as well as Wang Chuanfu of China’s BYD (‘Build Your Dreams). BYD is a manufacturer based in China’s Guangdong Province that specializes in battery technology, parts building and vehicle manufacture. They’re also one of the world’s premier makers of cellular phone batteries.

The meeting between the two companies took place at the Elektrotraktion Technology Centre in Isenbüttel, and was followed by test-drives of prototype electric and hybrid vehicles at VW’s test-track in Wolfsburg.

Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, a member of the Board of Technical Development at VW commented:  "Volkswagen will consistently expand its successful ‘BlueMotion’ Technologies. Hybrids and electric vehicles will play an increasingly important role, of course. Particularly for the Chinese market, potential partners such as BYD could support us in quickly expanding our activities".
