The custom-built Ferrari Daytona Spyder that Don Johnson drove as Det. James "Sonny" Crockett in Miami Vice was often roughed up during the show... and it still remains in a pretty rough shape. Until today.

The car is now being painstakingly brought back to a pristine state by the experts at Rainbow Collision Center and soon will be exhibited at the Volo

Auto Museum, in Illinois. A holiday season debut is planned.

"This is the car that was used and abused by Don Johnson for two years in the series," said Greg Grams, museum owner.

That Daytona Spyder became notorious among Ferrari aficionados... because it wasn't really a Ferrari, only a replica built on a Corvette chassis. Indeed, with only 165 real convertible Daytona Spyders ever made, the economic logic behind the decision is easy to understand.

The Volo Auto Museum is known worldwide for its multi-million dollar collection of nearly 300 antique and famous cars. Among its many treasures are wacky hotrods and legendary Hollywood vehicles, such as the original Batmobile, Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee, Starsky & Hutch's Gran Torino and Back to the Future's DeLorean.

Museum representatives are now looking to find the missing 1955 Porsche 550 Spider that James Dean drove to his death and are willing to pay $1 million for it.
