The Automobile Protection Association (APA) has just published the results of a study comparing the price of winter tires between Canada and the United States, revealing that Canadian consumers can save a bundle by shopping south of the border.
This is especially true for owners of SUVs and high-performance vehicles.
In both cases, American prices are typically much lower (between $61 and $123 per tire) at a time when the Canadian dollar is practically on par with its American counterpart.
The APA says the difference isn’t as dramatic for passenger-car winter tires, however, with savings ranging from $8 to $19 per tire in the United States.
Shopping on the net? Buyer beware!
The APA’s study shows, however, that buying winter tires in the US via a web site like TireRack.com isn’t worth the trouble.
While their prices may indeed be better than those of similar products offered in Canada, shipping fees and duty charges will likely cancel out any savings.
