Have you been enjoying the snowfall so far this winter season? I know I have! Unlike some of us here at Auto123.com, I am a firm believer in AWD. I have had the opportunity to drive new cars equipped with various systems over the years and let me tell you that nothing makes me happier than having an Impreza WRX or a Land Rover Sport Supercharged when faced with 45 cm of fresh powder in the morning.
Being a big fan of AWD has never insured me of owning a car with AWD. In fact, my 2004 XC70 is the first that I have called my own with four wheels working for me. What I have had for the last 15 years are winters tires on my old crapboxes.
In an ideal world, winter rubber and AWD come together as they have on my XC: Haldex + Nord*Frost5 = :-).
Recently, I was given a 2011 Infiniti G37xS for a week-long drive. On its own, this is a serious :-0, but without winter tires, it's a real :-(. Sure, I could accelerate, however turning and braking were severely compromised. To make matters worse, once stopped from a crawl in traffic, the car would slip laterally to the side, coming dangerously close to the sidewalk or other cars.
This all took place before the Québec-imposed December 15th winter tire deadline. There have been talks about moving the date up to November 15th but I think we should start by switching the d-date to December 1st.
What do you guys think?
