2001 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition - Value Performance

Volkswagen is offering a performance oriented version of its popular Jetta sedan for 2001. Isn't the regular Jetta performance oriented enough? Sure, it's one of the best in its class, but the new GLS based Wolfsburg Edition gets stripped of expensive creature comforts, arriving with sheer driving pleasure as its core value.

VW's rev happy 1.8T turbocharged four-cylinder is a joy to drive. The 150-hp engine works well with the smooth shifting 5-speed manual transmission - no automatic is available in this version. The clutch is light and progressive and the shifter has relatively short throws. By the way, the regular Jetta is available with the base 115 hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder, the hot 174 hp 2.8-litre VR6 (200 hp for 2002) and a torque-minded 90 hp direct-injection diesel.

While all Jettas are impressive performers, the Wolfsburg receives a sports-tuned suspension, aided by 16" BBS polished alloy wheels and P205/55R16 tires. This wheel/tire package makes for athletic handling while not compromising the ride quality.

These suspension adjustments become apparent when the road gets curvy. The Jetta's power assist rack and pinion steering is direct with no dead spot at center. While attempting to carve out the perfect apex, I was able to keep my arms and hands relaxed due to extremely supportive and grippy cloth sport seats - it's hard to use your arms for steering if you're holding on for your life. Other go-fast goodies include VW's perfectly designed leather wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel, plus a leather hand-stitched shift knob, boot and brake handle.
