Toyota has facelifted its large Avalon sedan for 2003 and Toyota Canada Inc. has changed the way it will market it.

The Toronto-based firm will sell a single model of the Avalon beginning this week -- the XLS for $45,560. The only extra-cost option is premium paint.

Changes for 2003 include a an all-new grille with chrome-plated accents, a redesigned front bumper with new fog lamps and a wider air intake. The rear view is updated with new combination tail lamps and redesigned chrome trim.

Inside, there's a new layered meter gauge background, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with simulated wood-grain accents.

The 2003 Avalon also gets new dual-stage front air bags, standard rain-sensing windshield wipers, and an electrochromic auto-dimming outside mirror on the driver's side.

Tony Wearing, group vice-president of vehicle sales and marketing at Toyota Canada, says "Avalon is the affordable luxury sedan that only Toyota could build. Avalon offers big-car roominess and ride quality, elegant interior amenities and the confidence of total Toyota quality and safety in a package of exceptional value."

Avalon's powered by Toyota's 3-litre V6 that produces 210 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 220 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm delivered to the front wheels through a 4-speed, electronically-controlled overdrive automatic transmission.
