Having owned three BMWs prior, the Jaguar was a bold, some would say idiotic move. Jaguar has a history of shady electrics and questionable reliability overall, while BMW had at that time a respectable name in the industry for both. This is not necessarily my experience though - more on this in a minute.

The Sovereign was wonderfully powerful, with a velvety smooth 223-hp 4.0-L inline 6-cylinder driving the rear wheels via an equally silky 4-speed automatic transmission. Merging onto the highway was uneventful as was eclipsing posted speed limits.

All the while the ride was wonderfully civilized, a good compromise between impact absorbing comfort and spirited handling. But beware that what makes the car so compliant is also the Jaguar's Achilles heal. Its rear air suspension tends to go mechanically and then physically wayward, as personally experienced, making what was once poised seem anything but. When affected the car's rear end bounces over highway expansion joints, heaving and bobbing infinitum. A little mineral oil will temporarily cure the problem but, depending on the severity of the leak, it will be back in no time. The dealer recommended fix can cost thousands so a car with this job already behind it is a better bet. Also, be forewarned that a previous owner may have taken the cheap way out, replacing the complicated air system with conventional struts. While this quick-fix works, the obvious benefits of Jaguar's sophisticated setup will be lost.
