Last-gen A4 makes a fairly solid used car buy--but avoid earlier models and CVT transmission where possible
Looking for a used Audi A4, are you? Why not! It's more upscale than a Subaru Legacy, offers AWD on every single model and comes with plenty of high-end, premium features to keep the luxury enthusiast happy.

2002 Audi A4

For the past several generations, the A4 has been one of those respectable, sensible luxury cars with a knack for winter-busting operation. The latest generation went on sale as a 2009 model with revised powertrains, upgraded handling and a bigger body. It's got those sexy LED running lights now, too. With the new A4 on dealer lots, many drivers of older A4s will be trading their machines in for a newer one.

Technically, the last-generation Audi A4 started in 2002. This model carried on through 2005 before an extensive revision took place for for 2006. The update saw the A4 get new styling and engines, as well as revised suspension and electronics components. The shift from the pre-2006 ‘B6’ chassis to the newer ‘B7’ left the premise, model selection and much of the platform the same. As such, we’ll group both together into one story.

The A4 was available in numerous body-styles, which included wagon, sedan and even convertible variants. Under the hood, earlier ‘B6’ A4 models got a 1.8 litre turbo engine with 170 horsepower or a 3 litre, 220 horsepower V6. A4 was available in a front-wheel drive version with a CVT transmission-- though driving enthusiasts preferred the available five or six-speed manual.

From 2006 and on, post-makeover A4 models were powered by a new two-litre direct-injected four cylinder turbo engine, or an optional 3.2 litre V6. Horsepower was rated at 200 or 255, respectively.

Most owners say they’re more than happy with the performance of the four-cylinder turbo engine from either generation. The V6 will offer more grunt, but it’ll drink more fuel and likely be more expensive to maintain in the long run.
