Volvo's hot new S60, shown here in 300-hp 'R' trim, is a potent challenger in a midsize entry-luxury market that seems full to capacity. Others worth mentioning are Infiniti's performance oriented G35, VW's powerful new Passat W8 and even the Chrysler 300M.

Others to take a look at in this category are Volvo's excellent S60, now available as a 300-hp S60R, and Volkswagen's Passat, also receiving a severe dose of horsepower in W8 form. The BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 are quite a bit smaller overall, but superb nevertheless. While these Europeans will most likely cost quite a bit more than the limited edition Acura, Chrysler's lower priced European-style 300M is another worthy contender.

From behind its new rear decklid spoiler adds a racy touch, highlighted by outside corner lights. The rear aerodynamic skirt is the only other feature that sets it apart from its stock Type S sibling.

Still, Acura has a few things worth considering as well. Few cars have as high a resale value, mostly due to superb reliability and excellent build quality. Also, while near the end of its life cycle, the TL has had most of its early bugs worked out and justifiably should offer years of dependable and therefore enjoyable service. It's hard to put a price on that.
