Sure it can sleep a small army but can it haul? Just open up the sizable rear liftgate to a total of 4,718 L (166.6 cu ft) of cargo volume with the seats removed - enough for a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Getting stuff in and out should be easy enough due to an extremely low 533 mm (21 in) lift-over height. With the seats in place 813 mm (32 in) is available from the rear seatbacks to the rear door - plenty for most people's day-to-day life. Tumble the 3rd row forward and that space almost doubles.

What flaws are most noticeable? While not particularly a flaw, its rather thirsty combined city/highway fuel consumption rating of 14.0 L/100 km is exasperated by the need for premium unleaded gasoline, a bitter tonic to swallow considering current fuel costs. Other than that, and a serious lack of CD audio, probably the most obvious vice is an absent driver's side rear sliding door, currently de rigueur in the minivan class. As user friendly as this feature is it would get in the way of the camper's much more convenient picnic table - perfect for eating a Wendy's BLT salad after hitting the drive-through. To some its most prominent blemish is its quirkiness. As much as Volkswagen has attempted to mold the Eurovan to American tastes it's the odd one out in parking lot pecking order.

Is being different bad? Not to those who make up the van's cult following. I test at least 100 new vehicles per year yet never before have been pulled over by an odd-looking but enthusiastic European-accented man asking "Ist yoor Eurovun foor sale?" That's the kind of loyalty carmakers dream of attaining. Sure it's different, but the flower child of minivans is still 'cool man'.
