Last-generation Swift appeals almost solely on price
Some Swift owners have reported sporadic clutch issues that seem to be caused by a problem with hydraulic clutch lines. If the clutch in the Swift you’re looking at fails to engage when you release the pedal, it’s definitely in need of repair. Note that this condition could pose a safety hazard as it would create an inability to shift gears, and may result in stalling.

You’ll also want to be sure to check for signs of alignment trouble. Where appropriate, release the steering wheel on a flat road and ensure the car carries on in a straight line. If it doesn’t, a trip to the garage is likely due. Inspect tires for signs of excessive wear, too.

Swift + isn’t an expensive car in the used market, but a few checks could save you money if the seller is trying to pass off an expensive repair bill.

Test-drivers are also advised to inspect the interior for signs of wear or damage, especially to the seats. Some owners report premature seat wear that leaves the bolstering and cushions flat.

If you’re looking for a proven, nonsense-free small car ownership experience, you may want to look elsewhere.

A check engine light could indicate a number of problems-- though the most likely one is a faulty sensor. If there’s a check engine light on, be sure to find out why.

Check for any engine roughness or hesitation during idle, cruising, and during both moderate and full-throttle acceleration. A known issue with the engine’s intake valves on early models could be to blame. Repairs to remedy the valve issue were covered by a service bulletin.

Lastly, shoppers who ultimately choose a Swift + (or one of its twins from GM) should ensure all recall work is performed-- or they may wind up with their throttle stuck in the wide-open position in cold weather if the throttle body freezes.

Other possible issues included fussy engine computers that could malfunction in cold weather, fuel-system glitches, and premature wear of the timing belt. If buying a Swift +, be absolutely certain the timing belt isn’t overdue for a change. If it is, factor a timing-belt replacement into your budget and have the work carried out immediately.

Note that fuel system, timing belt and engine computer problems are all likely to leave the car inoperable if they occur.

End of the day, shoppers might save a few bucks and wind up with something a little different by choosing a Swift-- though overall reliability is questionable at best. If you’re looking for a proven, nonsense-free small car ownership experience, you may want to look elsewhere.
