The 'chopped' look of the Ragster originates from three particular elements in the bodywork, the first of which are the stumpy

A-pillars. Compared to the regular New Beetle, they are approximately 90 mm (3.5 in)shorter. In combination with narrow side windows, and low-profile front and rear glass, a low-slung look was created.

The third element in the design of this special New Beetle is its roof. Finished in brushed stainless steel, the U-shaped fixing provides the rear pillars and a frame for the retractable fabric top. The fixed roof rails also turn the Ragster into a crossover Coupe-Convertible; with completely retractable front and rear windows, as well as a retractable roof VW claims that the concept has the same 'wind in your hair' feeling as a regular convertible.

Between the Ragster and the production New Beetle you'd be hard pressed to find any other differences at first glance, but

there's much more than what initially meets the eye. Volkswagen fitted new fenders and new front and rear bumpers with different marker lights and vents. Its headlamps and taillights are also revised; they're slightly more oval than the original round units.

The body of the Ragster is painted in an aptly-named 'Rebel White', accented with a pair of shiny, metallic racing stripes that match the roof. What's more, 235-width, 19-inch light alloy wheels are wrapped in low-profile rubber with retro red-line sidewalls - the prefect accompaniment which would make any So-Cal street rodder smile.
