Pontiac's G6 sedan has done extremely well, pulling in positive reviews from the automotive media establishment and plenty of new customers too.

GM's "excitement" brand should be able to find even more G6 buyers now that its extending the model's range above and below the current 2005 offering.

What's coming? As promised, a new entry-level model comes to market for the 2006 model year sporting a 167-horsepower version of GM's efficient 2.4-litre Ecotec four-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing for enhanced engine performance. It shaves $1,540 off of the $24,700 2005 V6-powered G6 sedan, for a new entry price of $23,160.

Second on the list is the addition of a two-door G6 GT Coupe, featuring a bump in performance and style for $27,995.

"With the addition of these two new competitively priced models, the G6 family continues to grow," commented Janice Dickey, GM Canada Marketing Manager for the G6. "The 4-cylinder will represent our highest volume model while the Coupe adds more panache and performance to the most striking midsize car in the segment."

There won't be many who disagree that the new G6 coupe, to replace the now defunct Grand Am coupe, moves the domestic nameplate up a notch or two with regards to refinement and style.

Another model to increase the visibility of Pontiac's G6 lineup will be the upcoming retractable hardtop convertible, an innovation leader for the entry-level midsize segment. Not only will the folding top provide all-weather protection for thoseliving in colder climates who prefer top-down driving in the summer, but when the roof is raised exterior ambient and wind noise is reducedwhile rollover crash protection is increased.

The top, made by Germany's Karmann which also builds for many other automakers, opens or closes automatically in less than 30 seconds by pressing a single button. Incidentally, it has the distinction of behind the world's largest retractable hardtop. The retractable configuration also allows for greater rear seat room, making the two-door G6 capable of accommodating two adults in back, in either coupe or convertible guise. Of course, the G6's class-leading 2852 mm (112.3 inch) wheelbase is also responsible for the extra legroom needed to accomplish such a feat.
