Audi and Peugeot will again fight for victory in the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours presented this weekend.
In the LMP1 category (17 cars), Audi and Peugeot arrive at Le Mans with two new brand cars (Audi R18 TDI and Peugeot 908) and will both run three works cars, and are likely to fight alone in the category.
The « old » Peugeot 908 HDI run by ORECA team will aim at a podium finish, the French private team having already clinched victory after Peugeot and Audi’s troubles in Sebring 12 Hours.
Audi, who captured a 1-2-3 finish last year after Peugeot’s technical issues (three 908 ran in front, and all had to retire later on), aims to win again this year. The pressure is on Peugeot, which was defeated three times by its main German rival (the 908 took its only win at Le Mans in 2009).
Behind the clash of the titans, the other LMP1 cars will fight for the « petrol-powered cars » victory, with Pescarolo team, which make acome back at Le Mans, both Rebellion’s Lola-Toyota, or one of the OAK team’s Pescarolo car.
Aston Martin Racing will run its new AMR One, which experienced a very difficult debut at Le Castellet and during the Le Mans test day.
We will also see the first hybrid technology car at Le Mans : Hope Racing’s ORECA Swiss HY.
In LMP2 (11 cars), the cars will probably suffer fromthe additional weight imposed by the ACO destined to slow down these small prototypes. Cars to follow this weekend include the Signatech Nissan Oreca, the Level 5 team’s Lola Coupé-Honda, or the Strakka Racing’s HPD ARX.
