Seeing red

1947-2007 : 60 years of passione. 60 years of legenda. 60 years of vittoria. The world's most renowned brand boasts quite a resume for its 60th anniversary. Not bad for what was once a tiny shop driven by an unconditional love for motorsports.

Make no mistake about it: motorsports is the reason behind the existence of the Cavallino Rampante, the prancing stallion that has been crowning the marvels that come out of the small town of Maranello, near Modena, in Italy.

Yes, we're talking about Ferrari, the mythical brand, one of the very few in this lowly world that never veers from its one and only mission: motorsports.

There are no compromises to boost sales, no family cars, no cheap models, no so-called "sport" utility vehicles and certainly no trucks! Even Porsche, irresistibly lured by easy money, fell into the trap when it launched the Cayenne! But not Ferrari. Never! The Commandatore would never have tolerated it. And his descendants know better than to mess with the padrone, because he sees everything, knows everything and hears everything from his perch in heaven, to the right of the Great Boss!

To celebrate its 60 years of road car manufacturing, Ferrari launched a world tour on January 18 in Abu Dhabi, site of the next Ferrari theme park. The final stop will be, obviously, in Maranello, on June 24. Fifty countries in 80 days. On March 29, it was Montreal's turn to welcome the "Ferrari 60 Relay". Ten of the brand's most famous creations were showcased.

Here they are, in chronological order:

1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa 250
Developed for the 1958 racing season, the TR 250 is motivated by the 3L V12 engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo. The nickname Testa Rossa (red heads) comes from the red-colored cylinder head covers. However, this model, produced in only 19 examples, is truly differentiated by its two front fenders that are separated from the hood to allow the air to cool the huge front drum brakes. Main victories: Le Mans and the 1958 World Championship.
