Aston Martin's Ugly Duckling

Is slowly turning into a swan with sales
We're not sure if it's irony or not that Aston Martin's slowest, smallest car is called the Cygnet. Whatever the reason, this Aston Martin is definitely the odd one out in the family. Based on Toyota's iQ subcompact city car, the Cygnet is meant to bring in more buyers to the Aston Martin brand.

In a joint effort with Toyota -- who provide the engine, transmission and frame -- Aston Martin have (successfully?) managed to create a city car that's fuel-efficient, practical, uber small and dressed to the nines with luxurious amenities: hand-stitched leather adorns the interior, there's a navigation system, a leather-clad steering wheel and shift knob, as well as a six-speaker radio.

The Cygnet, which goes on sale in Europe this month, is also Aston's slowest car with a 97hp engine that will eventually get you to 100km in 11.6 seconds – clearly this ride's flight feathers never grew in.

For anyone who thought a luxury city car was an oxymoron, Aston Martin has clearly proved you wrong. Environmentally friendly, emitting only 120g of carbon dioxide per kilometre, cute(ish), well-appointed inside, plus you get the Aston Martin wings on the hood; it all sounds too good to be true... and with a price tag of $50,500, it kind of is.

Suddenly, the Cygnet's mug just got ugly again. The idea of expanding their brand to a wider audience makes perfect sense, but doing so at such a steep cost to the consumer seems a bit crazy. Despite the high cost, Aston Martin officials revealed that they aim to sell 1,500 Cygnets a year, making it the second-best selling Aston after the V8 Vantage.

Our guess is Aston Martin is hoping their Cygnet will blossom into a world-market appealing swan over the next few years and prove that city cars can be luxury cars. We're not too sure the Cygnet will ever reach cob status.
