Land Rover Canada will shortly add a new powertrain to its still-newish LR3 model, which will make it more fuel efficient, less expensive and slower.

If this combination of features appeals to you, you'll want to check out the second-status (behind the upgraded Range Rover) model from the Ford-owned, English-based SUV company with the 4-litre V6 when it arrives.

This engine delivers 216 hp at 3,000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at exactly the same rev level, which it sends to all four wheels through a six-speed ''intelligent shift'' ZF automatic transmission.

All V6 models come highly equipped with a long list of four-wheel drive technologies including the innovative Terrain Response(tm) system, four-corner electronic air suspension, electronically controlled infinitely variable locking center differential and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels as standard.

The ''sport'' mode delivers more performance-oriented throttle response and gear shifts, says Barbara Barrett of Land Rover Canada, ''and f
eatures Land Rover's Command Shift operation - giving the driver full manual control of gear changing.''

Overall, says Richard Beattie, the executive vice-president of marketing and sales for Land Rover North America, the LR3 ''is enjoying record popularity in a highly competitive SUV market. The addition of this new engine derivative broadens its appeal and ensures our customers are getting the widest selection of choice when ordering their LR3.''

In addition to the list of features standard on the V6-equipped vehicles, Beattie explains, the optional premium package adds the following:

  • leather trimmed seating surfaces, shift knob, and front folding armrests
  • a 240-watt Harman/Kardon AM/FM/6-disc CD changer with nine speakers and remote audio controls on the steering wheel
  • power tilt and slide front sunroof with a fixed Alpine roof over the second and third rows
  • second row auxiliary audio port (behind center console), and an
  • "SE" Badge at rear tailgate

Barrett says pricing for the new LR3 model is available yet, but it will undoubtedly be somewhere in the mid-$50,000s or up.
