Most concepts are exercises not only in creativity and evocative design language, but also introductions for new technology innovations that make our lives easier, more comfortable, or more integrated with our other gadgets. First and foremost among most manufacturers, however, is the importance of fuel conservation and cleaner emissions, either through use of alternative fuels, or by reducing fuel consumption through weight reduction and more efficient drivetrains.

Although BMW reportedly claims that the Rocketman will be capable of delivering fuel consumption as low as 3.0 litres per 100 kilometres, there’s no concrete information on what the powertrain will be. What’s evident are the numerous, impressive measures of weight-shedding employed by the Rocketman’s design team. Most notable is the carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, which is actually exposed between the front wheels.

The lightweight, transparent carbon-fibre roof is etched with the Union Jack, blending tradition with space-age technology.

A small, but effective way of lightening the fuel load are lightweight alloy wheels directionally engineered to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Although it’s doubtful that the Rocketman will ever get the green-light as a production model, BMW’s new “Minimalism” philosophy indicates that a mini-MINI is a probability in the very near future.
