Canadian driver Bruno Spengler took advantage of the only mistake of his Audi rival Edoardo Mortara this weekend, in Munich, to win the second day of festivities at the Olympic Stadium of the Bavarian capital of Germany.
More than 54,000 fans visited the Olympic Stadium since Friday to assist to this first edition of the ‘Race of Brands’ of the DTM championship.
Spengler had to let go of victory yesterday, Mortara winning the final contest at the end of the day. He was allowed a 'revenge' match on Sunday however and this time, he did not let go.
“This is just fantastic. Winning in front of so many people and in such an incredible atmosphere is simply great. For five seconds, I felt like being on a different planet. I was having great fun,” said Spengler.
Mortara made his only mistake of the weekend by touching a wall in the final confrontation. His damages car put an end to the final race and Spengler was conceded victory.
“I have given everything and I only made one mistake throughout the weekend. Too bad that it happened in the finale. We are on the limit all the time and that a little mistake can have a huge effect. Still, I have enjoyed the weekend in Munich very much”, he explained.
Spengler had had the best of Mercedes teammates Christian Vietoris and Jamie Green as well as Audi rival Miguel Molina in his first three confrontations on Sunday to deserve a place in the final.
As for Mortara, he had challenged three Mercedes rival in Renger van der Zande, David Coulthard and Susie Stoddart, always having the best of them.
Vietoris and van der Zander were given the third position of the day's challenge.
Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg gave a demonstration on board of the Formula 1 Mercedes GP car on Sunday. David Coulthard also drove the Red Bull F1 car for the pleasure of fans at the stadium.
