Did you know that automakers have collectively sold a total of 178 cars per hour in Canada last year? That's a 0.42 improvement over 2009, a year marked by recession and major setbacks in the auto industry. Obviously, some brands still performed admirably, while others had a more difficult time convincing buyers.

Here are the winners and losers of 2010 from a sales per hour standpoint:

Ford dominated all the competition with 30.58 cars sold per hour, up by 4.91 from 2009. Surprisingly, Chrysler enjoyed the second-largest increase at 4.76 for a total of 23.3 cars per hour.

Closing the podium is Hyundai, which managed to sell 13.53 units per hour in 2010, an improvement of 1.74 cars over the previous year.

Now for the not-so-good news. Toyota, which suffered a historically-bad 12-month period, sold 3.61 fewer cars per hour than in 2009, averaging 18 units per 60 minutes.

General Motors (-0.6), Suzuki (-0.36), Lexus (-0.18), smart (-0.07), Mitsubishi (-0.03) and Jaguar (-0.01) also experienced hourly sales declines.

Overall, it looks like the companies that were the most aggressive in terms of rebates, incentives and financing rates are the ones that posted the best sales performances.

What does it all mean in the end? Well, for one thing, Canadians are still holding the price as their number one priority when shopping for a new car, ahead of such important attributes as quality and safety.
