Other concerns are fairly minor--the worst of which being a possibly noisy differential, and a wiper motor that quits. If you're even somewhat adept with hand tools, it's not an entirely difficult car to work on yourself, either.
It's generally a simple, reliable machine with more bang-for-the-buck than half-price fireworks. And few cars can give their owners the chance to go really quick for a relatively small amount of money. The 5.0 loves bolt-ons, which are reasonably inexpensive. Throw in some suspension and sub-frame connectors, add engine upgrades to taste, and you'd have a heck of drag racer for not a heck of a lot of coin.
SN95 (1994-1998)
In 1994, the Mustang received a makeover to bring its looks in line with the times. The new, more modern shape hid a few updates, though this generation would kill off the 5.0-litre engine and replace it with a 4.6. Horsepower was in the range of 215-225, except for performance models.
Notable concerns here included front-end components from tie-rod ends to the power steering rack. This is partly due to faulty parts, though most Mustangs are driven hard too, often without longevity in mind.
Other issues dug up from discussions with those in the Mustang community uncovered only minor concerns--like parking brake cables, leaky fuel rails and a possible bad servo motor in the cruise control.
New Edge Style (1999-2004)
For 1999, the Mustang would begin to carry forward Ford's prominent new design language with a distinct angular and wedgy shape. With an award-winning 4.6-litre SOHC V8 engine bumped in horsepower to 260, this generation delivered more serious performance than ever before--and few V8s sound as lovely when pushed.
The interior took another step ahead in terms of style--adding black-on-white instruments, new color schemes and options. Panel gaps were still large enough to swallow a pencil, but for the Mustang's biggest fans, that's hardly a concern.
In this generation, Mustang packed even more power and options, while still managing to leave the original simplicity and proven hardware intact. This makes the 99-04 'Stang one of the all-time best choices when you want plenty of kicks for a reasonable price.
