The public reaction to the unveiling of the Cadillac Ciel concept was so positive, that General Motors is reportedly set to give the go-ahead to the Omega platform for a new flagship model.
GM executives believe a top-of-the-line model like the Ciel would help restore Cadillac's prestigious image and make the brand relevant again for many affluent consumers, challenging the status quo of luxury brands like Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
A hardtop version is already in the works and could be shown publicly in the months to come. While the launch date remains extremely classified, sources told The Detroit Bureau that the automaker hoped to have it to market by mid-decade at the latest.
In the meantime, Cadillac will introduce the ATS compact sedan and the XTS, aimed at “modernizing and redefining” the brand’s image, according to its marketing chief, Don Butler.
Also, let's not forget the possible debut of the ELR, a high-end cousin of the Chevrolet Volt using a significantly-updated version of its gas-electric powertrain. Dave Leone, chief engineer for rear-wheel drive and performance vehicles at GM, even said the ELR is unlikely to be the last “electrified” vehicle in the line-up.
That could mean one model focusing on fuel economy but another taking advantage of the potential performance benefits of electric propulsion – whether it's a plug-in (like the Ford Focus EV) or a more conventional hybrid.
The Ciel concept symbolizes Cadillac's next evolution, its plans to return to the throne it once vacated, as well as the green shift that will help it keep pace with BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and the like.
