Carmakers are starting to complain about the government's laid back approach to its green-rebate incentive. Sources say that buyers of 2006 and 2007 models which qualify for the rebate of up to $2000 haven't yet been able to apply for the reimbursement yet, and thus haven't been paid. The government, not the automaker, pays for the rebate.

This has caused concern with automotive associations and resulted in angry customers as well. A letter was written to Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon, Environment Minister John Baird and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty to express concern on behalf of these automakers and customers.

2007 Toyota Yaris is one of the eligible vehicles.

"Our members report they are already receiving numerous letters of complaint and frustration over the fact that no process to apply for the rebate has been established" said David Adams, president of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada.

Ottawa says it plans to finalize the process "in the coming months" and aims to have the rebates in the hands of new green car owners this fall.

Honda's controversial out-of-pocket rebate is being paid, says Honda Canada CEO Jim Miller.
