Holden’s worst kept secret will reportedly become official by the end of the week. Facing major financial problems, the Australian manufacturer will export thousands of Commodore sedans to the United States starting in 2013. They will be sold as Chevrolet SS (SuperSport) models.
The export deal is expected to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars and might also include SUV and sport wagon variants.
The new Chevrolet SS Performance (as the Commodore is likely to be known over here) will share its platform with the brand's NASCAR race car from 2013. Tests are currently underway and an announcement is expected later this year.
According to some sources, the Commodore and its Chevrolet equivalent could eventually be produced at the same North American plant before being exported back to Australia. That would fit GM's plan to develop global vehicles rather than unique models for individual markets.
You may remember that the Holden Commodore was re-badged and sold as the Pontiac G8 between 2007 and 2009. Of course, you all know how that turned out.
