Cars and audio systems have rode hand in hand since the 1930's. Over the years, we've witnessed the first AM radios, the good old eighth-track tapes, the once revolutionary cassette players and, more recently the CD players.
Soon, all those technologies will have disappeared from the interior of the car.
"I think anybody under 30 is probably using all MP3 devices. They don't buy CDs," says Michael Auburgh chief designer for Ford interiors. Which is why more and more manufacturers are seriously thinking about removing altogether CD players from their cars, and replacing them with newer technologies. Ford has the Sync system, Chevrolet the MyLink equivalent.
Already, the Spark, from Chevrolet, comes with an MP3 or smartphone socket instead of a CD player. It's a whole new ballgame in terms of in-car entertainment.
Removing CD players will save engineers approximately five pounds – a rather insignificant number for consumers, but valuable in the grand scheme of things, where weight reduction is crucial to lower fuel consumption figures.
With the way things are going, in 10 years, your CD player-equipped car could become a collectible item.
