Auto123.com reported earlier this week that there were negotiations between the IndyCar Series and General Motors representatives about a possible return to the series in 2012 for the American car manufacturer.
Well, it seems that it is almost a done deal as a press conference has been called for this Friday in Indianapolis.
We know for sure that the IndyCar directors are in the final stages of talks with General Motors about bringing the Chevrolet brand back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar racing in 2012. An insider of the automotive industry told Speed.com that the contract existed but had still not been signed as of Wednesday.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard and Gil de Ferran, the 2003 Indy 500 winner and co-owner of a current IndyCar team, pitched GM officials last summer and came away enthused about the response.
It has also been reported that Chip Ganassi could become Chevy’s factory team but the team owner denied having signed any such deal.
Words is also out that, not only is Chevy likely returning but that there is still a possibility that Fiat and Lotus could also power Indy cars from 2012, when the new chassis and engine rules debut.
