Jaguar's X-Type entry-level luxury sedan will carry a base price of $42,950 when it arrives in Canada late this summer.

That's the sticker price for the X-Type 2.5-litre. Jaguar Canada will announce a price for the X-Type 3.0-liter closer to its on-sale date.

All models will get Jaguar's Traction-4 all-wheel-drive system.

The base X-Type will get a 2.5-litre V6 that produces 194 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 180 pound-feet of torque at 3000 rpm, delivered to all four wheels through a 5-speed manual shifter or an optional 5-speed automatic.

The 3.0-litre model also gets a V6, but one that puts out 231 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 209 pound-feet of torque at 3000 rpm. The base transmission on this model is the 5-speed automatic, but drivers looking for a sportier ride can get the 5-speed manual for no extra charge.

On the safety front, all X-Type models will be fitted with anti-lock brakes, dual-stage front air bags, front-seat side air bags, and side curtain airbags for all outboard passengers.

Standard equipment also includes bird's-eye maple wood veneer and Connelly leather seats, automatic climate control, one-touch open/close power windows, a 120-watt audio system, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and integrated communications and entertainment controls for the audio and optional phone.

X-Type is particularly important in Canada, because consumers here tend not to buy as many expensive luxury cars as they do in the U.S., and because it will mean a younger group will be buying Jag for the first time, and many of them will be women.
