Toyota Canada will add a hybrid model to its lineup of GS sport-sedans early in 2006, as the 2007 GS 450h.

The general intent of this model is to provide V-8 performance and fuel economy ''comparable to the aver compact sedan.''

Stuart Payne, the director responsible for Lexus in Canada, says Lexus will try to accomplish this in the ''world's first gasoline/electric hybrid luxury sedan'' by being the ''first full hybrid vehicle with a front engine and rear-wheel drive.''

The GS 450h is powered by a completely new Lexus Hybrid powertrain, which combines a 3.5-litre V-6 gasoline engine with a high-torque electric-drive motor-generator, for a combined output of over 300 hp, along with 0-96.5 kmh (0-60 mph) acceleration in under six seconds.

''The new Lexus GS 450h does what, until recently, was thought to be impossible,'' Payne says, ''seamlessly combining exhilarating sport sedan performance with modest fuel consumption and significantly reduced emissions.''

With the ''dramatic new look,'' he adds, ''and the chance to enjoy sporty power without sacrificing environmental responsibility, we believe this hybrid sedan will attract a very loyal and enthusiastic following.''

Like its GS siblings, says Payne, the new GS 450h is ''distinguished by the expressive new L-Finesse design that brings a dynamic new visual appeal to the GS sport sedans. The GS 450h also features the lineup's longer wheelbase and increased interior room, plus many performance, luxury and safety features.''

The GS 450h will be 4,825 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, 1,425 mm high, and sit on a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

Pricing for the 2007 model will be announced closer to when the GS 450h goes on sale next year, Payne says.
