There's perhaps no more perfect a form of vehicle than the hatchback. More economical than an SUV, sportier than a minivan and roomier than a coupe, it's a form of transportation that's popular in Europe and catching on with urgency around the rest of the world.
Some carmakers are packing their hell-raising-hatches with horsepower figures approaching 300, not to mention the performance goodies to back it up. The Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Mazdaspeed 3 and Chevrolet HHR SS are just a few examples.
Mitsubishi is setting up to display a concept similar in philosophy to these machines at the 78th Geneva International Motor Show. Built from the Japanese automakers sport sedan family architecture, the Concept-S takes the form of a sleek and aggressive looking hatchback with styling cues from other Mitsubishi performance cars like the Lancer Evolution. There's a combination of a slanted nose and trapezoidal grille to communicate Mitsubishi's new performance car design to showgoers.
The look is no empty threat, as Prototype S is powered by a 2.0 litre, turbocharged 240 horsepower engine that drives all four wheels by a twin-clutch gearbox and sophisticated AWD system. A WRX-threat perhaps?
The Geneva Motor Show runs March 4 through March 16.
