RB: While watching the karters on Friday, I couldn't help but notice a lot of 'GM Racing' folks enjoying some karting on Friday
night at the track. What was going on there?
RF: With the help of Paul Cooke and Bob Cameron, we had a barbecue/karting event at the end of the day for GM Racing and Pratt & Miller. There were 60 or 70 combined from Team Corvette and Team Cadillac and Bob generously supplied about a dozen of his new F1-K karts to drive and, do they ever go! Everyone had a great time and Paul and Chere organized food and a few beverages (just a few), for the GM teams as well. I think they are still arguing and bragging back at the shop in Michigan!
RB: At Mid-Ohio a few weeks back, you were 'spotted' on the pit wall during the Grand AM Cup race. That's sort of an unusual place to see an American Le Mans driver?
RF: I have been trying to find some additional opportunities for our Team Ultra 94 Champions like Matt Champagne and Frank Launi. And with the help of Jim Holtom we were able to put Matt and Frank together in a Chevy
Cobalt SS as part of Jim's SCADA Pack team. Jim has three Cobalts, and son his Jamie, who was an Ultra 94 team member in 2004, and is a very talented young driver, drives for the team and has a couple of wins in the Grand-Am Cup series this year. I was able to convince Jim that Matt and Frank were of a similar level to Jamie and his team should give them an opportunity. They had a great time, did a great job, learned a lot (as did I). I was hoping to have a weekend off and work with them at Mid Ohio but was drafted into the Pontiac GTO in the Rolex Series to fill in for Jan Magnussen. But, John Heinricy from GM and the SCADAPack team were able to help Matt and Frank learn the cars and the track. And, by the way, Jamie and his co-driver Andy Lally won the ST class in their Cobalt SS. Matt and Frank found out that officiating even at the so-called professional level can leave a little to be desired (that's from their spotter who witnessed the incident). We can get into that later if you would like.
