More Power, Better Handling, Hotter Style
BMW, seemingly in response to stiff competition from Japanese and domestic premium brands, has upped the performance of its benchmark 330i sedan for the 2004 model year by introducing a new optional 330i M Performance Edition Package.

Auto enthusiasts are only too aware of what the M badge stands for, and BMW follows up with a reportedly noticeable power upgrade. Filling the gap between the current 225-hp 3.0-L 330i and the sinfully sensational 333-hp 3.2-L M3 coupe, is a new 235-hp 3.0-L inline 6-cylinder, up 10 horsepower and 8 lb-ft of torque (222 lb-ft). BMW accomplishes this feat via modified intake and exhaust camshafts and performance-tuned Digital Motor Electronics.
A 6-speed manual is the base gearbox in the new 3, upgraded with a short-throw shifter and a shorter final drive ratio in the M Performance Edition package. The combination results in 0.5 seconds taken off the standard 330i's acceleration to 100 km/h, now 6.4 seconds instead of 6.9.
The 330i M Performance Edition package, created by BMW Individual, a division of BMW M GmbH, also boasts a new exhaust system, freeing up flow and delivering a sportier sound.

Standard 18-inch alloy rims shod in 225/40 ZR 18 front and 255/35 ZR 18 rear performance tires look and reportedly react well to steering input, enhanced by a more aggressively tuned suspension.
BMW also improves the look with an M aerodynamic kit, spicing up the front and rear fascias.
Inside, new sport seats feature cloth and Alcantara inserts reduced slippage during aggressive cornering while an M Sport steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara anthracite improves hand grip on the wheel. Additionally silver cube aluminum accents the interior as does an upgraded anthracite roofliner.
Also the primary gauges feature red needles and tachometer reads a 300 rpm higher redline, the result of the new engine's increased capability.
The new 330i M Performance Edition package adds $6900 to the standard 330i's $46,950 price, for a total of $53,850. Production began last month so it should be arriving in BMW dealerships across Canada shortly.
