First sports sedan from Genesis

Seoul — Hyundai’s design centre in the Seoul suburb of Namyang was the setting as Dr. Woong-Chul Yang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group R&D Division, presided over the unveiling yesterday of the new G70 sports sedan. This was complemented by a public launch event in Seoul’s Olympic Stadium in front of a 15,000-strong crowd.

The G70 joins two other Genesis models already on the market: the G90 and the G80. The automaker continues the development of the luxury brand it first announced during its launch of the G90 back in 2015. By 2021, the Genesis lineup will include six models, including at least two SUVs.

Impressive specifications
The newest Genesis will be sold in South Korea beginning on September 20, and will make its North American debut in early 2018. The sports sedan will come with a choice of two turbocharged powertrains, including a 3.3L V6 turbo (365 hp) and a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo (249 hp). It will also feature drive assist systems like Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control, as well as advanced safety elements like nine standard airbags and the active hood function that lifts the hood up by a few cm to protect pedestrians in the event of a collision.

The increased stiffness of the body is obtained through new assembly methods like hot stamping methods for structural parts, extended use of structural adhesives and the use of highly rigid lightweight steel.

New standard of design
Luc Donckerwolke, head of design at Genesis, pointed out that the sporty and sophisticated silhouette of the Genesis G7 represents the new design standard of the brand. Given the car’s sporty character, it was given an elongated hood and a short trunk. In addition, a number of visual body elements, such as the exclusively designed LED headlamps, enhance the identification of the car as a luxury sports model.

The concept governing the cabin also revolves around delivering a sporty driving experience. The sport steering wheel is linked to a specially tuned electric power steering system, the active suspension optimizes road handling, and the torque vectoring system ensures greater stability when cornering. The use of aluminum elements contrasts with the Nappa leather surfaces, while the smoothness of the dashboard further boosts the sedan’s luxury feel.

Buyers will be able to choose between 10 different exterior and five interior colour schemes. The engineers at Genesis have also developed a new metallic paint that gives the car’s finish a more brilliant shine.
