The Draw: A snarling, high-revving I6 engine, manual or SMG gearbox options and instantly-recognized style and class defined the E46 generation of this high-performance BMW 3-Series variant. Coupe and convertible models were available, and feature content included top-line must-haves and numerous luxury touches. The M3 was a blast to drive hard, handled beautifully, and came with all of the goodness that typically comes from famous German-engineered posh-rockets. Output of 333 horsepower from a silky straight-six engine is more than sufficient for most shoppers.
Checks: Be sure the model you’re considering has been treated to frequent, high-quality fluid changes as set out in the owner’s manual. Budget for a full tune-up and fluid change if unsure. If the model you’re considering was made between 2001 and mid-2003, investigate a potential bearing and lubrication problem that could cause engine failure. BMW remedied this problem with an inspection and replacement bearings, though opting for a model from 2004 and later is ideal for maximum confidence. On earlier models, have a mechanic inspect the vehicle’s rear subframe for signs of cracking or separation from the body of the car. Finally, triple-check for proper operation of all on-board electronics.
