The Draw: From the get-go, Genesis Coupe was tough to beat for the money. Handling, power output and looks were top-notch relative to price, and the up-level 3.8 litre engine drove the rear wheels with over 300 horsepower at a price to embarrass many less-powerful, front-drive competitors. For a high-performing, fun-to-drive sports coupe, Genesis Coupe hit the mark for value and enthusiast appeal—especially in top-line ‘3.8GT’ trim.
Checks: Listen closely throughout the cabin for signs of squeaks and rattles, inspect the body for misaligned panels and ensure the seat rails are firmly bolted to the floors—as a few owners have reported having to re-tighten these important fasteners. Be sure the push-button start system works as expected, and be sure no unwelcomed noises are coming from the suspension or rear differential. Engines and drivelines look to be robust, but shoppers after the turbocharged four-cylinder model are advised to ensure the past owner hasn’t ‘turned up’ the boost via a chip or wastegate modification, which can adversely affect the life of the turbocharger and engine.
